While the 94th Academy Awards were in the spotlight for films like Dune, CODA and The power of the dog, Will Smith remains on stage this year’s most talked-about Oscar moment to punch Chris Rock. Earlier this week, Smith broke his silence on the Oscars incident, apologizing to both Rock and the… SNL alum’s mom, explaining why he didn’t apologize to Rock during his Best Actor acceptance speech. Now Smith’s daughter Willow Smith has reacted to what happened between her father and Rock.
Will Smith slammed Chris Rock after the comedian joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s baldness (which is a result of the actress having alopecia) during his Best Documentary Feature presentation. Just over four months later, and just days after her father’s public apology, Willow Smith informed Billboard that this incident hadn’t affected her creativity or “rocked me as much as my own internal demons.” As she explained:
Like her brother Jaden, Willow Smith has been in the spotlight all her life, initially because she was just the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, but now because of her singing career and a handful of acting roles. As for what her dad Chris Rock did, Willow made it clear that she understands that Will Smith isn’t perfect, but still loves him despite his flaws and, in this case, his less-than-great action. She also pointed out that because of the “position” she and the rest of her family are in (probably referring to their celebrity status), it means they are put on a pedestal and monitored more not to make mistakes or show off defects, which can be harmful in the long run.
Just days after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars, Willow Smith took to social media to tell her followers that “literally everyone” is “going through a lot” right now, advising people to “just be nice.” This was supposed to be a response to the incident but now we have the above comment clearly her thoughts on what happened. Willow’s statement comes two months after Jada Pinkett Smith opened an episode of Red Table Talk commenting on the blow, saying how she hoped her husband and Rock would have a chance to “get a chance to heal, talk this out, and reconcile.”
In early April, Will Smith canceled his membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and a week later, the organization banned Smith from attending the Oscars or any other Academy-related event for the next 10 years. In regards to this week’s public apology, it was reported that Jada Pinkett Smith reportedly urged Will to say he was sorry to Chris Rock “because it’s turned into a really dark cloud over her. Red Table Talk series’, and that it ‘would be impossible for him to move forward successfully’ if he didn’t elaborate on what was happening. As for Rock, he responded to the apology indirectly through his comedic act, and an unnamed source has said Rock has no interest in talking to Smith because he supposedly sees the apology as a way for the Men in black star to seek forgiveness more from the public instead of the Everyone hates Chris Creator.
We’ll pass on any updates on Will Smith and Chris Rock’s plight as/when they come in, but until then our 2022 release schedule is available for those looking to plan their cinema experiences for the rest of the year accordingly.
