Uber prices surged wildly after SF’s Outside Lands festival

It’s a story as old as time – a music festival ends and people have to go home. Unfortunately, that journey of several miles back to your apartment almost always turns into a nightmare.

To mitigate the travel apocalypse, Outside Lands will provide additional MUNI service during the festival, with additional buses running along the 5R Fulton bus to the north of Golden Gate Park, and more service along the N Judah light rail line south of the park. Despite these additional reinforcements, other bus routes, such as the 38 Geary, were flooded shortly after the festival’s departure.

Cycling is the easiest way to get to and from the festival and Outside Lands offers extensive bike sheds at the entrances.

If you dared to use a taxi company after the festival, special pick-up zones a few blocks from Fulton and Judah tried to reduce the logistical burden, yet you probably experienced some serious sticker shock.

Until about 9pm, prices remained pretty reasonable by 2022 standards, with a short trip to the Lower Haight costing about $20 and a trip to Oakland costing $45.

But when dueling headliners SZA, Phoebe Bridgers and Disclosure started to leave at 10pm, prices skyrocketed, with that same 4-mile ride to Lower Haight costing $62, and that Oakland ride clocking in at $140. A ride to North Beach was approaching $80. And the cost of trips to more distant San Francisco neighborhoods, such as Mission Bay or Glen Park, nearly reached triple digits, at $90.

So unfortunately, if you’re planning on taking a ride for the next few nights, it might be best to skip that headliner’s encore.
