DALLAS — Former President Donald Trump convincingly won the 2024 GOP presidential nomination straw poll at the three-day meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Texas

Trump, who has repeatedly teased about making another presidential run in 2024 to try to return to the White House, captured 69% of the votes cast in the anonymous online straw poll, according to results released by CPAC on Saturday. .

Support for the former president, who remains the most popular and influential politician in the Republican Party and continues to play the king’s role in the GOP primaries, has risen from his 59% shown in the anonymous online straw poll at the CPAC meeting in Orlando, Florida in February.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in second when asked about the 2024 presidential nomination, with 24%, down from his 28% shown at CPAC in Orlando five months ago.

The results of the CPAC Texas straw poll were released just before Trump’s keynote speech. DeSantis, who appeared at the Orlando conference earlier this year, did not attend the Texas meeting.

sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, speaking at the conference Friday, received 2% support in the ballot. None of the 21 names on the ballot made it to one percent.

“President Trump remains the most dominant force in American politics, and as yet another poll shows, it is a reality that will propel the growth and success of the Republican Party through the midterm and beyond,” Trump spokesperson said. Taylor Budowich to Fox News after the results. were released.

The 2024 straw poll also included a second list without Trump. His name was replaced by his oldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

DeSantis topped the second vote in 2024, with 65%. Donald Trump Jr. received 8% support, with Cruz at 6% and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at 5%. No one else reached two percent on the second vote question.

The former president’s strong performance in unscientific research comes as no surprise. Long the largest and most influential gathering of conservative leaders and activists, CPAC has become a Trumpfest since its victory in the 2016 presidential election.

In a separate question about who CPAC goers would like to see as Trump’s running mate in 2024 when he launches a campaign, DeSantis received 43% support, with South Dakota Gov. Kristi Mention at 9% and Pompeo at 7%.

No one else got four percent on the running mate vote.

Voting on the CPAC Texas straw poll ballot was open only to confab participants, again voting via the CPAC app.

Matt Schlapp, president of the American Conservative Union, which leads CPAC, said: “There is an unbreakable bond between President Tump and the conservative movement. He just did the things he promised to do and they are grateful for that.”

Veteran Republican pollster Jim McLaughlin told Fox News that the CPAC straw poll is “the ultimate barometer of what’s going on in the conservative movement.”

McLaughlin and Associates, which polled for Trump’s successful 2016 election and failed 2020 reelection bid, again oversaw the CPAC straw poll.

McLaughlin, who has been with CPAC for decades, said that “just like in the old days, when Ronald Reagan defined and set the tone for the conservative movement, it’s the same now with Donald Trump.”
