Antonio Conte speaks to media after Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-1 win in their opening game of the Premier League season against Southampton.
The Italian chose almost the same base as the last game of the last campaign in Norwich, with Cristian Romero Davinson replacing Sanchez, and five of Spurs’ summer signings sat on the bench while Richarlison was suspended. All the new recruits are in various stages of fitness, but are certainly making a much stronger bench than last season’s which was packed with academy youngsters.
Tottenham started with intensity, but it was the visitors who struck first. Moussa Djenepo defeated Emerson Royal on the left and rose in front of James Ward-Prowse to charge into the ground and past Hugo Lloris.

The Spurs tied the score with a goal from the Conte playbook in the 21st minute when Ryan Sessegnon ran in a header from the left and charged through the back post to hit a cross by Dejan Kulusevski from the right.
The hosts turned the game around at 31 minutes with Eric Dier stooping to head home a curling cross from Son Heung-min.
Spurs’ third goal was bizarre as they split the field and Emerson ran to a pass from Son to hit a low cross past the six-foot box and somehow Mohammed Salisu managed to get it behind him and to cut into its own net. It went 4-1 when Emerson got to the byline and shoved the ball in to Kulusevski who curled a shot low into the net.
Conte made five changes as the second half progressed, but in the end the score remained the same as Spurs finished at the top of the early Premier League table.
