Square Enix Acquisition Looking More Likely, With Sony a Potential Buyer

The chances of a Square Enix Acquisition rising and Sony appears to be shortlisted as a potential buyer. During a conference call, the developer revealed he plans to sell interests in his studios, with David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, expecting companies like “Sony, Tencent, [and] Nexon” are interested in a purchase.

The likelihood of a Sony Square Enix acquisition

As Gibson suggested in the tweet posted above, Square Enix’s restructuring and diversification of studio capital is one way for the company to look more attractive to buyers. Earlier in the thread, he notes that the sales of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal “were driven by concerns that the titles were cannibalizing sales from the rest of the group,” at least in Square Enix’s words.

To put this into context, Eidos Montreal founder Stephane D’Astous revealed in an interview in late July that he “heard rumors that Sony said they are really interested in Square Enix Tokyo, but not the rest.” This would explain why his studio, along with Square Enix Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, was sold in what D’Astous describes as a “garage sale.” This would be in line with previous rumors from various insiders such as Jeff Grubb about a Sony Square Enix acquisition. As a formal courtship, Square Enix is clearly making the right financial moves to entice companies like Sony.

The existing relationship between Square Enix and Sony makes the acquisition not only more credible, but also more likely compared to Nexon and Tencent. The Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is still a PlayStation console exclusive, and Forspoken will be an exclusive deal that can last up to two years. Final Fantasy 16, which is expected to be released in 2023, is also exclusive to PS5. The Square Enix acquisition would significantly bolster the PlayStation Plus catalog at all levels, competing with Xbox Game Pass.

In other news, Sony has acquired leading anime retailer Right Stuf and Beyond Good and Evil 2 is getting a new head writer.
