How to See Bike Routes in Google Maps

Google Maps is a must-have app for finding your way around, but it’s for more than just cars and public transportation. You can also use Google Maps to find the best cycling routes near you. We’ll show you how.

When you get directions on Google Maps, you’ll typically see five modes of transportation to choose from: car, public transit, walking, bike sharing, and cycling. The bike option is tucked away at the end, and we’ll focus on that.

To get started, open the Google Maps app on your iPhone or Android device. Use the search bar to find the location you want to cycle to.

Find a location.

Then tap “Directions” on the map with location information.

Tap "Travel directions."

Select the bike icon in the top part of the screen.

As with driving directions, you may see a few different routes to choose from. The routes will each indicate how long it will take to reach the destination. Select one by tapping it.

Select a route.

Once you have selected the desired route, tap “Start” to begin turn-by-turn navigation.

Tap "Get started."

That’s all! Attach your phone to a bike mount and you’re good to go! This is a great way to find cycling routes near you. If Google Maps can’t find a route you like, you can measure your own.
