The Buffalo Bills are without three key defensive players this weekend as they take on rival Miami Dolphins. Bill’s Coaching Sean McDermott announced on Friday that safety Micah Hyde, cornerback Dane Jackson and defensive lineman Jordan Phillips are each out for the game.

Hyde, second-team All-Pro last season, did not train on Wednesday and Thursday and is out with a neck injury. He sustained the injury during a tackle by Robert Woods during the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game against the Tennessee Titans, and was eventually taken to the locker room. According to the Buffalo News, he is getting a second opinion about the injury. McDermott declined to say on Thursday whether Hyde was with the team that day.

Jackson, the team’s top outside corner in Tre’Davious White’s absence, also sustained a neck injury during the game against Tennessee. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center for evaluation that evening, but was eventually released. He didn’t train this week either.

Phillips, who has made a great start to his second term in Buffalo with 1.5 sacks and four quarterback hits in two games, is out with a hamstring injury.

In the absence of this trio of players, the Bills will rely primarily on the youth. Jaquan Johnson is likely to take the helm alongside Jordan Poyer, who is also battling an injury. Rookies Christian Benford and Kaiir Elam are likely to play the most snaps in corner alongside slot man Taron Johnson. Ed Oliver, Tim Settle and DaQuan Jones are likely to play more snaps along the inside of the defensive line, while players like Greg Rousseau, Carlos Basham Jr. and AJ Epenesa could also see more work.

Against a Dolphins attack that was both efficient and explosive early in the season, it’s not ideal for the Bills to be without some key defenders. Luckily for them, their own offense is incredibly hard to stop. Maybe more this weekend.
