For Android 13, Google has redesigned the look and feel of the bedtime mode offered by Digital Wellbeing, while adding a rather useful “Dim the wallpaper” option.
The changes begin with Bedtime Mode with a new UI for preferred content on Android 13 for easier setup and management. After opening from Settings or the digital wellness ‘app’ shortcut, you will come across the new card-based list.
The first card indicates the current state of bedtime mode with a quick “Turn on now” button. When enabled, there is a cute animation (complete with a CAT) and two options: “Turn off for now” and “Pause for 30 minutes.”
“Bedtime routine” is the following card: use a schedule (same time UI as before), turn on while charging or None (for manual control).
“Customize” is the final section, with “Do not disturb for bedtime mode” and “Turn off bedtime mode at the next alarm” unchanged from before. New is a “Screen options before bedtime” with:
- Keep the screen dark: Turn off the always-on display
- Dim the wallpaper
- dark theme
Having the bedtime mode to darken your background is very useful and makes for particularly interesting looks with the Pixel 6a’s Nature-swept collection.
Version 1.1.463639936.beta (409068), which was widely rolled out to the beta channel yesterday, makes (h/t Mishal Rahman) this new option for dimming wallpapers. We first looked at the option in May. Meanwhile, Android 13’s bedtime mode redesign looks set to go live in mid-July, if not sooner. The revamp doesn’t show up on Android 12 Pixel phones we checked today.
